The X-Files Blu-ray Season 8 "Black Crush" Problem

The X-Files Season 8 on Blu-ray has some type of rendering/encoding/authoring problem that manifests black crush symptoms, and may or may not be adjustable, depending on your TV and Blu-ray hardware. None of the other seasons have this problem.

Each screenshot shows a comparison between the iTunes HD Preview and the Blu-ray. These screenshots should look practically identical, as they do with all other seasons. Look at the comparably dark Season 1 screenshot as an example that the two screenshots should be practically identical.

There are a couple episodes not shown here, because the iTunes preview was not sufficient for comparison. However, they ARE affected. EVERY episode in Season 8 is affected.

Each screenshot has been created in full resolution directly from the video stream with no adjustment. Click each image to see it in full resolution.

The issue has been confirmed by members of in multiple countries. Some members have reported that by changing settings on their TVs or Blu-ray players, Season 8 will recover detail and seem to match the iTunes comparison. HOWEVER, others have NOT been able to get their picture looking as it should, no matter what settings they change. Although we haven't yet had an expert on Blu-ray authoring provide the exact technical reason why this problem happened, it's believed that incorrect settings when rendering/encoding the digital remasters for the Blu-ray video stream caused the issue. Every other season has the correct levels by default. The Season 8 Blu-rays, by default, should play at the correct levels.

On Reddit, one of the guys from the company that remastered X-Files in HD (Illuminate) tentatively confirms that the problem would have occurred with the authoring company that created the Blu-rays.

Here's one bottom-line summary posted by a user at "The 'below black' detail IS on the S8 discs as they currently stand, but if the player is clipping below black before it gets to the display then people will NOT be able to change any settings on their TV to retrieve the 'crushed' information. This is definitely a kooky mastering problem of one form or another, and I hope that Fox will be able to issue corrected discs for those who want/need them."

Season 1, Episode 3 - "Squeeze" - encoded CORRECTLY with no practical difference between iTunes and Blu-ray

Season 8, Episode 1 - "Within"

This comparison from "Within" is actually part of a "Previously, on the X-Files..." segment. This means that we can also compare this frame to the Blu-ray of its original episode, "Requiem" from Season 7. Both images are captured from Blu-ray using the same method and all the same default settings.

Season 8, Episode 2 - "Without"

This episode IS affected, but the iTunes preview did not contain a suitable comparison shot.
